Dr. Burton E. Hardin is an active composer with over 30 opus numbers. Additionally, he is a prolific arranger with hundreds of arrangements to his credit. He has been a winner in the American School Band Directors Association Music Composition Contest and the Oklahoma Composers’ Symposium Composition Contest, adjudicated by Halsey Stevens. Hardin received his bachelors and doctorate degrees from the University of Oklahoma and a masters degree from the University of Wichita. He was a member of the US Army Field Band in Washington, D.C., and the NORAD Band in Colorado Springs, Colorado, prior to accepting a commission in the US Air Force Reserve. He completed 20 years of service in the Reserve and retired as a Major. A well-known teacher, he taught music in Wichita (Kansas) public schools before entering the college level. Dr. Burton has taught at the University of South Carolina, Pennsylvania State College and Eastern Illinois University. He retired as Professor Emeritus at Eastern Illinois University. Concurrent with his teaching career, Dr. Hardin remained an active Hornist, playing in regional orchestras in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, North Carolina and South Carolina as well as the Sinfonia da Camera. As a recitalist and chamber musician, Hardin has performed as principal or soloist with groups ranging from the Little London Winds to the Colorado Springs Chamber Orchestra. He continues to be active in performance and recording. Dr. Hardin has recorded three solo albums: Burt Hardin Plays it All, Vocal Music with Horn and Burt Hardin Plays Horn. On all these recordings he used multi-track recording to play the entire sections of Horns.
